Various Outdoor Photos

There are a number of photos in my collection that I’ve taken over the past year but never shared. Here are a few that were all taken in the great outdoors. The black and white photo was taken in Muir Woods. The photo of the dam and the crane were both taken at Espada Dam. The purple bird and the lagoon photo both came from Disney’s Animal Kingdom. And the photo of the rock road came from a trail near my apartment here in San Antonio.

  1. You should add Joanna Covington to your LJ feed, if you’re not already friends. Both of you guys posted photography examples today . . . seems like you might be able to compare notes on technique or lenses or whatever.

  2. Her stuff is nice. It looks like she’s using a Nikon D70s, which like most Nikons is a great camera. Between Nikon and Canon, you pretty much can’t go wrong, although I’m a Canon guy myself. Once you buy into a camera system, it takes a lot to make you want to switch equipment.

Now, the new Nikon D3 is enough to make me swoon. What an outstanding camera. Too bad I don’t have $5,000 for a camera and another few thousand dollars on top of that to replace my Canon lenses. Still, drool…

My best piece of advice for anyone taking photos is to shoot RAW and learn to use a RAW converter. Doing this is like going back to the days of a darkroom where the negative was just the beginning and where a skilled photographer could do astonishing things with their photo. It requires more time and attention, but the end results are totally worth it.

The thing I think I could most improve is my composition. I’m glad you like these, but to my eye I think I could get a lot better. I feel like very few of my photos have strong composition, although I do have a few that I am proud of.

  3. Most of that was Russian to me (but JB would probably get most of it) . . . I just appreciate the back-end result w/o any knowledge of the underlying techniques. It’s the cheap/lazy way out!
