You could try a water to gas conversion kit and run your car on a mixture of water and gas. That would improve your mileage and cut down costs.

Until the big manufacturers come up with more economical engines, there isn’t a great deal we can do.

Seriously, though, the efficiency of four-stroke engines is so miserable . . . not good for life in the moment, but very hopeful for future outlooks of mpg, in my mind.
