Going through my archives, I ran across this wonderful Milky Way photo that I previously shared on Flickr but not here. I took this in July 2014 on a trip to visit family in Pagosa Springs, Colorado at a spot I’ve returned to several times. On this particular night, I got incredibly lucky with finding a location that so neatly captured the Milky Way in such a great orientation.
With so much time between when I took this photo and today, my memory of the evening is limited. It was dark, and I recall having trouble finding a good vantage point. I was using a rented lens – the wonderful Canon 24mm f/1.4. I think I rented it specifically to take nighttime photos on this trip, and it worked well. I ended up with a few interesting photos from this trip, including one I’ve never published, and I’ll try to share more of them in the future.
Great photos often come down to being in the right place at the right time – even if that means standing in the dark in the middle of the night.
